1. Federal Income Tax Calculation (IRC § 1 & Rev. Proc. 2024-40)

Federal income tax withholding is calculated using the official progressive tax bracket tables established by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). For tax years 2025 and 2026, the calculations incorporate the standard inflation adjustments released under IRS Revenue Procedure 2024-40:

Tax Rate Single Filer Bracket Married Filing Jointly Bracket
10%$0 to $11,925$0 to $23,850
12%$11,925 to $48,475$23,850 to $96,950
22%$48,475 to $103,350$96,950 to $206,700
24%$103,350 to $197,300$206,700 to $394,600
32%$197,300 to $250,525$394,600 to $501,050
35%$250,525 to $626,350$501,050 to $751,600
37%Over $626,350Over $751,600

Standard Deductions

Unless a user customizes their itemized deductions or pre-tax accounts, taxable income is determined after subtracting the statutory standard deduction:

  • Single Filers: $15,000
  • Married Filing Jointly: $30,000
  • Head of Household: $22,500

2. FICA Payroll Taxes (Social Security & Medicare)

Under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA), employee payroll deductions are fixed by federal law:

Social Security (OASDI) Assessed at 6.20% of gross wages. Governed by the Social Security Administration's taxable maximum wage base, which is capped at $176,100 for tax year 2025/2026. Any earnings above this ceiling are exempt from Social Security tax.
Medicare (HI) & Additional Medicare Standard Medicare is assessed at 1.45% with no income cap. Under the Affordable Care Act, an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.90% (totaling 2.35%) applies to wages exceeding $200,000 for single filers ($250,000 for married couples).

3. Self-Employment Tax Modeling (IRC § 1401 / Schedule SE)

For independent contractors, freelancers, and gig-economy earners (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Upwork), our calculator applies the statutory Self-Employment Contributions Act (SECA) tax:

Step 1: Net Earnings from Self-Employment = Gross 1099 Income × 92.35% (0.9235 factor per IRS Schedule SE).

Step 2: SECA Tax Calculation = 12.4% Social Security (capped at $176,100) + 2.9% Medicare (uncapped) = 15.30% total.

Step 3: Above-the-Line AGI Deduction = 50% of the calculated SECA tax is deducted from Gross Income before applying the standard deduction and federal income tax brackets.

4. State-Specific Income Tax Architecture

State tax treatment across the United States is categorized into three structural models:

Zero Income Tax States (9 States): Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire (earned wage tax 0%), South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. State withholding is modeled as exactly $0.00.
Flat Income Tax States: States such as Arizona (2.50%), Colorado (4.40%), Georgia (5.49%), Illinois (4.95%), Indiana (3.05%), Michigan (4.25%), North Carolina (4.50%), Pennsylvania (3.07%), and Utah (4.65%) apply a uniform single rate across all taxable income tiers.
Progressive Bracket States: States like California (up to 13.3%), New York (up to 10.9%), Hawaii (up to 11.0%), and New Jersey (up to 10.75%) utilize graduated marginal tax brackets, which our mathematical engine computes cumulatively per tranche.

5. Historical Inflation & BLS CPI-U Indexing

Our Inflation & Purchasing Power Calculator utilizes annual Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) data published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Historical purchasing power conversion follows the formula:

Target Purchasing Value = Base Value × (CPI-U in Target Year / CPI-U in Base Year)
